Discernment Counseling in Washington State and Arkansas via Telehealth

Get the clarity you need for a path forward when one of you wants to stay and the other isn’t sure.

One of you is fighting for the relationship while the other is questioning whether there is anything left to save.

You’ve talked about separating. You’ve talked about trying therapy. Maybe you’ve had the same painful conversation over and over, but neither of you feels any clearer about what to do next.

Discernment Counseling is designed for couples at this exact crossroads.

Discernment Counseling Is Different From Couples Therapy

Discernment counseling is not couple therapy. The goal isn’t to convince either of you to stay or leave. Instead, we slow the decision down enough to understand how your relationship arrived here, what each of you has contributed to the patterns between you, and what would need to change for the relationship to move forward.

During our sessions, we’ll spend time together and individually so I can better understand the patterns, hurts, and failed attempts at repair that have brought you to this point. You can expect thoughtful and direct questions that help you make sense of moments of pain and stuckness, your own role in the relationship, and your hopes and concerns about the future.

I understand the weight of this decision and respect the autonomy of each partner— whether you’re leaning toward the relationship, leaning out, or genuinely unsure. My role is to help you develop a fuller understanding of what has happened between you and what it would require to intentionally choose a path forward: working on the relationship, moving toward separation, or maintaining the status quo for now.

The Three Paths You’ll Consider

The decisions that are considered throughout discernment therapy are:

1. Maintain the status quo
Pause the decision for now without making an immediate commitment either way.

2. Move toward separation or divorce
Gain greater clarity about ending the relationship.

3. Commit to six months of couples therapy
Take separation/ divorce off the table temporarily while giving the relationship a focused opportunity for repair.

Is Discernment Counseling Right for Us?

  • One partner is considering ending the relationship while the other wants to keep trying.
  • You’ve discussed divorce or separation but aren’t certain what you want to do.
  • Traditional couples therapy doesn’t feel appropriate because one partner isn’t ready to commit to repairing the relationship.
  • You want to make a thoughtful decision rather than continuing the same cycle of staying, leaving, and reconsidering.
